Look elsewhere!: Collars

This is the second PetSafe collar I have bought for my German Shepherd who weighs about 80 pounds. He's a year and a half old and after moving to a new home with no fenced yard or invisible fence, he thought it would be a good workout. The Elite was my first PetSafe collar. I only take the second one because I lost the first one and later found it under a dog blanket in my car. I liked the first version of this collar I had before but after purchasing an updated new version I gave the old version to a family member for their golden retriever. When I bought this one in October 2017, I thought it looked sleeker and less bulky than the previous version. When I opened the package, the collar felt cheap. I thought it was a good brand so I'm sure it will stand the test and prove me wrong. The tines seemed a bit smaller and my dog has thick hair on the back of his neck, the shock option didn't seem to do anything unless it was on the highest setting and even that was a mild shock. He's a smart dog and never had to shock him, and I almost never had to shock him. The warning horns worked best for him anyway. In June I was about to disconnect the collar from the charger and noticed that the small black part on the charger was cracked and broken off. Release small metal pins. I tried pulling the black piece out and seeing if I could somehow reattach it, but it got stuck in the collar's loading area. It still managed to hold the charge, but I had to hold the charger carefully and make sure it didn't move at all. If he moved, he would fall out immediately. Also, the little rubber pads that were supposed to cover the charge points on the collar and remote never stay in place. They break right away so I wouldn't trust that for water resistance if you have a dog that loves the water. Anyway, fast-forward a month later and the collar has warmed up and is now fully fried. I haven't had this collar in a year! I chose the PetSafe brand because the reviews were good, it had the exact range I wanted and the previous collar was much better made. It was made very cheaply for the cost of this collar and I am very disappointed! I would buy a protection plan but previous reviews have said it's not worth it and it doesn't cover things like that anyway. So this is my third collar and I've decided to give up PetSafe. Try the PetPat collar. It feels like it's gotten a lot better, and while it might not have the highest range I wanted, so far it's great. It even has a vibration setting, and the rubber covers on the charging points are thicker and almost suction to keep water out. And the best part is, it was only $50! So if you're looking to spend a lot of money on a poorly made collar, this is for you. I wish I had never bought this collar, such a waste of money!
