I bought these to slow down my filter and make it safer for shrimp! I cut a hole in a piece of one of these sponges and stick it onto my filter inlet tube to prevent the shrimp from being sucked through the holes. It's not pretty because you can see dirt on the white sponge, but I'm more concerned with functionality. I also clip another piece over the outlet of my filter to fan out the flow so there is less current so my shrimp can swim without hitting the wall. This sponge has fairly large pores but still makes my filter more reliable and I have more. This does not affect the operation of the filter. (I'm using a Tetra Whisper filter for reference.)
