I have purchased several adapters and returned them with no success, but this adapter works great. My favorite 23" Cinema HD display now works as expected with my 2020 27" Retina 5K iMac. According to other reviewers, you need to hold down the Option key while activating the "Scale" button in your old display's settings panel to ensure you get the full resolution your display offers.
