Review on Recessed RL460WH927PK 2700K Retrofit White by Rachael Taylor

4 inch LED recessed retrofit with UPB dimmer - my results

I just did a pretty extensive comparison shop/review of almost a dozen different manufacturers of LED recessed retrofits (including Lithonia, Juno, Halo , Elite, Rayon) completed. , Nora, UTI, TorchStar, Designers Fountain, LiteChoice, EnviroLight) My selection criteria were narrowed down to: • 4 inch aftermarket LED units with 2700K light temperature to get closer to the whole house halogen built-in system I have • I prefer fairly deep white screen to get close to my Elco trim panels that have been removed/thrown away (I kept Elco cans around the house) • I needed LED units that turn on softly and a relatively have good dimming range and turn off smoothly with my UPB system (PCS and Simply Automated/Web Mountain Dimmer; which I had plenty of time and $50 upfront investment for, about 50 circuits) • was interested in square rather than round (square are a bit more fashionable these days), although bras are restricted Unfortunately I couldn't use modded Cree blocks that others have recommended as Cree at least doesn't make a baffled version at least in their 4 inch products . By far, Halo had the best blocks I've found in my testing. These are: • compactness, quality factor, matte finish, good price; available in stores or online • low power consumption, high color rendering index and excellent light quality; Slightly brighter than my 50w halogen bulbs (I reduce the Upstart software dim setting), still "warm" but cleaner light with high color rendering • Halo doesn't have as deep a baffle as I like for my 9' 6 -inches would have preferred ceilings, but "acceptable" depth • Halo also offers perfectly matched 80° wide-flow versions with gimbals that work well as wallwashers, as well as 40° narrow-flow for focus areas (Lithonia had comparable products, but their drivers and build/finish quality was very poor) • Halo offers a pair of clip-on metal reflectors (bronze finish) which I have used for outdoor use • Halo's leading feature is its electronic driver; how smooth they turn on, very good dimming range with my UPB dimmers (which I spent about 4x what the LED upgrade cost me on) and VERY smooth shutdown; None of the other 10 manufacturers come close • I bought and installed about 40 on my main and top floor from Revain - Pacific Electric Wholesale who gave me a good price for the quantity. I had "good" results in my tests. with Rayon: • 3rd best of my UPB dimmers, but still not as smooth on or have the same wide dimming range or ultra-smooth turn off as Halo units (UTI had a smooth #2 driver but very flat baffle; Juno/ Elite /LiteChoice had deep baffle units but poor drivers) • Very good build quality and quality light, higher wattage/higher lumen output than Halo (slightly more than I needed); I noticed that they use Cree drivers and talked about it. • Rayon offers an interesting Versa Trim feature that lets you choose from different colors and trim styles. I bought half a dozen of their square white baffle finish units which look very elegant in my hallways (nice styling update) but to be honest they were too expensive to put anywhere else, costing £4-5 times more than round atriums. Also, BeesLighting did not offer a discount for buying more than me. • But then again I bought 6 and they look amazing in my hallway; I've used round halos a lot more often. A neat installation trick I would recommend for people upgrading their recessed LED jars is to purchase the male-only orange 2-wire 18ga LED plugs (manufactured by Ideal under the PowerPlug Luminaire brand name). Separate; They appear to be the new standard for all LED lighting) from Arrow Electronics (part number 30-682SM, you only need the male part of each connector). If you've got wire cutters and wire strippers, these connectors are almost as easy to install as the ridiculous Edison screw base adapter that comes with most upgraded LED blocks, but they're a lot neater and give you a lot more room to connect. Work in the can, especially if you have adjustable wide or narrow bay blocks (or large base blocks like rayon).
