Review on Black Instant Read Food Thermometer with Probe - Digital Meat Thermometer for Cooking and Grilling by Brian Micheals

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Very economical instant read thermometer (FAST) cooking thermometer with some downsides to consider.

I use the expensive Instant Read Thermapen for all aspects of food preparation: reheating in the microwave, grilling/grilling, and checking the temperature of food in the freezer and fridge. I was curious how well a very inexpensive version would work. Thermapen (registered trademark) has two states: OFF and ON, no additional buttons or functions. Open the probe, insert it and read almost immediately. I check my green tea hot water temp, my Keurig brew temp, as well as daily meat temp when grilling chicken, meat, chops, etc. This is an invaluable must-have when grilling - just watch any cable channel program. Grill masters - they live from the temperature of their grill. So I attached this device to my Thermapen. The results were close, but for $100 you get a reliable, repeatable reading, and for $15 you get a close but not reliable reading. One of the main changes was that the cheap version isn't as fast as the expensive version, and as soon as you removed the sensor, the cheap version started changing right away. You didn't have much time to read the display, but there is a HOLD button. The Thermapen held the reading for a few seconds so you could read the results. Ergonomically, the thermapen's task swings smoothly, and when you bring it back to the body with a click, the display turns off. This device does not have the silky smooth feel of the probe and there is no CLICK when placed back into the case. The most important aspect of any device is accuracy and reliability. Thermapen was accurate on every measurement, this device came close but never matched Thermapen's accuracy. I used ice water for the reading at 32 and boiling water for the test at 212 degrees. I also used both for the pork chops I grilled that night. They do seem to be making progress compared to some previous thrift probes, however, but Thermapen has been the version I continue to rely on for cooking and grilling. and overall indoor temperature readings. A very good economical device and if you've never used an instant read sensor this can be a good starter device to see the benefits before putting your finger on your expensive fillet to see if it's medium or well done.
