Review on Argon ONE M.2 Raspberry Pi SSD Board (Expansion Board ONLY) - Supports B-Keys and B+M Keys - Exclusive Compatibility with Argon ONE V2 Raspberry Pi 4 Cases by Miguel Yurco

Revainrating 3 out of 5

There is FINALLY an integrated SSD boot solution for Raspberry Pi!

I jumped at the chance to get my hands on the ArgonONE case when I saw how it moved all the connections to one side and set the stage for my Raspberry Pi 4B+ into an amazing portable entertainment and gaming device into device center. The Raspberry Pi 4 brought an update that made it possible to boot from a USB device instead of just a microSD card, meaning the device can now have longer lifespans and faster boot/upload times. This means I no longer have to carry around an extra external drive! The way it works is simple, they give you a board that fits into the new bottom of the ArgonONE case that basically takes any m.2 SATA SSD and exposes it as a USB device. Once everything is set up, simply insert the USB patch key between the m.2 compartment and the nearest RPi USB port on the back. They offer this feature as an add-on to existing ArgonONE cases or as part of a kit when purchasing a new one. Tip: Even if you already bought the original main case, you can still buy a kit as the updated case now has an internal jumper that determines how the Pi behaves if the power goes out, as well as full HDMI ports size on the back ! The advantage of this arrangement is that you can access the contents of this drive without opening the case (instead you replace the dongle with a USB AA cable on your computer). It also has a potential downside. Unlike the bottom of the ArgonONE case, you cannot access the RPi's microSD card slot while the drive tray is installed. That said, it's only a downside if you insist on booting your Pi from a microSD card, but you're not THAT crazy, are you? :)

Pros
  • There's something to it
Cons
  • Crumpled packaging
