This book is a wonderful story about a young Japanese man and his introduction to many new worlds. I learned so much about whaling and Japanese culture while reading. I liked the innocence of the protagonist: how open he was to new ideas and experiences he encountered. The characters and relationships that have developed over the years are by no means superficial. The fact that this is a real story (with actual drawings of the real protagonist shown throughout the story) makes it even better. It was by no means a quick read. However, I couldn't end my day without picking up where I left off and carefully moving through the story. I will add it to our daughters' reading when we study Japan later this school year.
