I doubted this lining would make a difference. We installed hardwood floors over concrete and last year we lived under our living room carpet with no padding. I really wanted half inch rug but didn't want to pay like $200 for an 8x10 so I bought this 1/4 inch rug for about $50. Stepping onto my carpet now is such a relief. . The Cush rug has definitely improved and now I know my rug will last longer too. I can't talk about smoothness because I have a sofa and other furniture that will hold it. The fit was perfect for me. so no need to cut. Also now I understand that a 1/2 inch spacer would probably create a tripping hazard and that is what is required.
