A good way to test a bottle cap is to remove the foil or label from the neck of an empty bottle, preferably a clear one. Insert the cork, then look all the way around for a seal or interface between the cork and the bottle. The results for the Joie brand were pretty impressive: nearly 1/4 inch all around! For comparison, I ran the same test on some standard corks I bought from a liquor store years ago and they barely formed a tight seal, less than 1/16 inch at their widest point. (I've used Zyliss stoppers before, unfortunately I don't have any on hand to compare.) When I first used this stopper, I noticed that it kept popping up a bit when it was set at an angle. At first it warned me, but turns out this was done by closing the cork with one hand. The seal itself was fine. The two-handed approach seems to work best: holding the bottle with one hand, firmly pressing the cork into place with your thumb while pressing the lever down with the other hand.
