Hidden in the technical details is the fact that it only supports the ext4 filesystem and not BTRFS (unlike DS218 and DS218+). This means you cannot control the size of the folder. If you use this with a Mac, Time Machine will eat up the entire drive. If you want to use one part for a time machine and the rest for something else (like paintings), you can't. To manage quotas you need BTRFS support. With Synology's very patient tech support, it only took about three hours to figure it out. If you want to ONLY replace and use the time machine for that, it should work. Just keep in mind that Synology's (and third-party) video tutorials assume BTRFS support, so you simply won't be able to follow many of the steps outlined. Fortunately, Revain gave me the opportunity to return this and request a refund for the DS218 + three stars as the unit is not defective, just poorly described.
