I previously had a Tokina 12-24. I liked this lens, but it only worked really well in daylight. I had problems at night or in low light conditions like dinner parties etc. So I sold it and bought 11-16 for f2.8. Like the Tokina 12-24, this thing is built like a tank. The finish on November 16th. is flatter than on 12/24. I also think 11-16 feels a little lighter. Its focus ring has this amazing clutch and is very smooth. The zoom and focus rings are very tight. Like I said, the build quality is amazing. I put it on my d300s and immediately noticed a difference in low light. The only thing that bothered me was the back focus which I've found so far on a couple of quick test shots seems fine. panoramic shots. It doesn't produce shots as "normal" as 12-24. By that I mean they look a little more elongated (barrel shaped) - like you see in magazine shots of huge crowds taken from above. I will enjoy using this lens at 11m when we travel to photograph landscapes. Pictures. At 16mm, it's great for wide group shots of friends while still providing plenty of background for parties and events. f2.8 means I don't have to worry about light or flash and extra weight. update [2. October 2012]: After using this lens for over half a year, the difference compared to the Tokina 12-24mm is amazing. You can take photos in very low light. I got the D800 less than a week ago and the 11-16 worked in FX mode from 15-16mm with no vignetting. I can also put my D800 in DX mode and use Tokina like I did with my D300, except now I have an 18MP crop sensor for shooting. I thought about selling the lens and going for Nikon 14-24 f2.8 but three times the price - no way! I'm sticking with my 11-16 as it's still one of my favorite lenses.
