Review on Wireless Receiver Streaming Multi Room TuneBox30 Digital by Brian West

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Premium design, premium performance, affordable price. This is a great and useful tool.

So what is this thing? Basically, you're looking for a network connection device for audio streaming that also has a built-in DAC and can be used as a WiFi hotspot. So a wireless DAC working over WiFi.plus has digital outputs (COAX and optical) but can also create a wireless hotspot. The? For real? YUP! After Google decided to drop Chromecast Audio, I started looking for a suitable replacement that could stream both Spotify and DLNA in my house over WiFi. There are plenty of "streaming" jacks on the Revain, but most work via Bluetooth or are terribly expensive. Bluetooth has a limited range and, due to the transmission format itself, generates compression artefacts. I needed to be able to remotely access my music library stored on my desktop PC upstairs and stream it losslessly to my downstairs listening station. I also wanted to make sure that whatever device I use is compatible with Spotify and shows up as an available destination in the Spotify app. I saw the Tunebox2 popup in my search and really took a leap of faith by ordering it. It looked like it would do what I needed. But I really wasn't sure. Their website is also somewhat vague. But the price of this was much lower than other solutions and I decided I would give it a try. I'm glad I did. Construction: This little box is solid and feels VERY high quality. Thick brushed aluminum front panel and backplate. Faux leather upholstery. From the packaging to the device itself, everything screams quality. It comes with a BOOKLET. Did I mention it's hard? The processing is first class. Countersunk Hex Head Screws. metal compounds. Thick aluminum. Installation: The device comes in a box with setup instructions that direct you to your preferred mobile operating system's app store to download the setup app. After installing the application, turn on the device and search for it using the application, which offers multiple options for using the device. Once you've provided the device with the information it needs to connect to your WiFi, it will show up in your respective apps (Spotify and HiFi Cast in my case) as a streaming destination. The simple setup worked flawlessly the first time. How it works/sound: I bought this device mainly to feed digital signals into a DAC for listening through headphones. Tunebox has both coaxial and optical SPDIF outputs, and the optical output doubles as a 3.5 stereo analog jack (the same way Chromecast Audio worked). The built-in SABER ES9023 DAC itself sounds clean and punchy. The output, which was almost certainly intended to power an amplifier or powered speakers, was nonetheless able to drive the low-impedance headphones (ATH-m50) to an audible level. Overall: This is a winner. Period. I don't know of anything else that has the functionality and versatile connectivity of Tunebox and is worth it at this price point. I'm sorry the other reviewer was annoyed by the lack of uninterrupted playback. It's not what I need, but I understand your frustration. Yes, and one more thing. They sell two models. The one I bought was the TB20 which acts as the receiver. The TB21 (which I will definitely be buying as a companion) acts as an A/D converter, allowing you to feed audio to your wireless network. Imagine plugging in your turntable and streaming your favorite records to another room or throughout the house! They work together and you can add additional TB20 to create a multi-room stream. Even the new Echo Link doesn't do that for two hundred bucks! Good. I've said enough. If you are looking for such a solution, just buy it.
