Review on Hydor Line External Aquarium Heater by Sharon Smith

Mixed feelings about fish and aquatic life

This heater was purchased for use with a Fluval 305 canister filter in a 45 gallon public pentagram aquarium. The old glass tube heater's thermostat didn't seem to work anymore (probably because I lowered the water level a bit) and I came across this built-in model while looking for a replacement. First, the heater is a lot bigger than I expected. Installing above the filter but below the tank on my stand was too long (while maintaining the required vertical position) so I had to move the tank away from the wall to align with the drain hose behind the tank. Tank. Since it's also quite thick (much thicker than the hoses themselves), the tank is now a few inches from the wall instead of almost flush with it. The Fluval 305 filter also uses finned tubing, which I found after purchasing the heater is not 5/8" per se, but 3/4". Several online posts have said that connecting finned tubing directly to the heater will cause leaks. I ended up buying a pair of Fluval rubber hose ends that just slip onto the ends of the cut finned hose and have not leaked to date. The scale does not match the two thermometers in the tank. Both thermometers read 2 degrees higher than on the dial. As long as it stays constant, it doesn't matter. The ambient temperature inside the house will only be 65C, but the heater doesn't seem to have a problem keeping the tank at 78C. Still, it's nice not to be able to show the glass tube heater inside the tank. This will make the installation cleaner.

Pros
  • 1/2 inch hose
Cons
  • All right
