Review on 🎧 Digital Walkman WM-FX290W AM/FM Stereo Cassette Player with Tuning Functionality by Marc Gallner

Revainrating 3 out of 5

The cassette is not ergonomic, but good for the price.

I haven't owned a Walkman since around 1985, so it's been interesting to see how far cassette technology has come since then. I don't see much. This Walkman only requires one AA battery - much lighter than the one that used to require four AA batteries! The tape speed is incredibly stable. You can shake and turn the thing in all directions and hear no difference in playback. Sounds good considering I'm listening to tapes that I recorded thirty years ago, so they might sound even better on recently recorded media. Most disappointing is that the inserted cartridge is completely covered. All older Walkman players had a small window through which one could see the cassette label and the amount of tape on the drums. Not only is there no window, when you open the lid you can see the opposite side of the cartridge. You have to pull it out to see the label on the side you are playing with. There is no automatic stop when rewinding or fast forwarding. Once it reaches the end of the band, it keeps pulling the band until you stop it, the battery runs out, or the band breaks. Luckily it stops in playback mode. Of course, it doesn't have Dolby noise reduction, so my Dolby-C encoded tapes sound a bit weird. At only thirty bucks, it's a good deal if you just want to listen to your old tapes.

Pros
  • Sturdy construction
Cons
  • Not a gun
