
Free ammonia measurement in my Seachem Ammonia Alert (I highly recommend this instead of using an ammonia test kit, it just hangs in your tank and gives a constant reading of free ammonia which is the only toxic ammonia) were too high. I checked my pH and it was around 8.0. I am using these pH tablets and my free ammonia levels have gone down. The reason for this, I found after doing some research, is that apparently high pH levels make ammonia more toxic. A neutral pH of 7 is also what most fish prefer (of course there are exceptions, do your research). I'm naturally high, but DON'T ALWAYS TRY TO REGULATE YOUR PH WITH THESE PILLS. The fluctuating pH will cause STRESS in your fish and they are likely to develop ichthyophthyriasis or some other opportunistic disease. There is only ONE way that I know of to permanently correct the pH of your water to a more neutral level and that is to purchase a reverse osmosis filter. These pills are a very temporary solution. If you add them to your aquarium, other factors will raise or lower your pH soon after, even if no new water is added.
