Review on Purina ONE SmartBlend Natural Chicken and Rice Dry Dog Food for Adult Dogs by Jami Boetel

Healthier dog food at a great price

We used to feed our dogs much more expensive grain free dog food but in light of recent research linking high doses of peas and other legumes to heart disease in dogs (particularly dilated cardiomyopathy ) we checked the labels on our "high-end" dog food and found that peas and potatoes were among the first ingredients. We've spent some time researching the ingredients of many other dog foods and found that most of them contain high levels of either peas or potatoes. Some of them contained large amounts of corn as a filler, and still others contained the usual ingredient "bone meal" without mentioning the source of the bone meal (e.g. chicken, beef, etc.). To our dismay we have learned that this could mean that the feed is made from processed pets, sick animals, etc. ordinary, non-specific 'bone meal'. We found two dog foods that met our criteria: Purina One Smartblend Natural Formula and Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance Limited Ingredient Diet Mutton Meal and Brown Rice. We regularly feed our dogs one or the other of these two foods, and sometimes mix them up for a change. Since we made the switch, our dogs still have the same energy levels, still have shiny, healthy coats, still maintain a healthy weight, and are very fond of both of these foods. It seems like a win-win situation. We feel more comfortable with this choice of food for our dogs and our dogs are very happy with the taste.
