The pad under the ankle strap is too short. I don't have massive ankles and the padding doesn't fully enclose my ankle. This keeps most of the strap in direct contact with your ankle/skin. Add some beach sand to a nylon strap and suddenly you have a recipe for discomfort and abrasion. Simply adding an extra four or five inches of padding to wrap the ankle completely under the strap solves this problem for most people and greatly improves user experience, quality, and functionality. The leash is in good condition, the materials are good, it works as it should but not the best due to the lack of padding. Dakine or NRS is much more convenient. Their padding completely covers the ankle.
