I kept looking for a filter or screen to get rid of small clumps in the litter. The worst part is when you let the litter dry out and the cats, as I call it, "hit rock bottom". Using a traditional tool to scrape material from where it's stuck to the ground usually creates a lot of fine particles that a regular shovel won't catch. . But it just doesn't work. The holes are too small. I use Walmart clumping litter, but I've used Fresh Step for years and do it occasionally. The grains are about the same size, with the only significant difference being that FS solved the big dust problem they had before and WM didn't. Either way, unless you shake each scoop for 30 seconds, the granules just won't go through. Think about it. It is not enough that the hole is larger than a grain. A few grains can still clog it, and they do. In order for the bedding to flow freely, the holes must be the size of a few grains. Small clumps would still get caught. So the search goes on.
