Dell laptop stops responding when the audio switches from the built-in speakers to external speakers when a TRS audio jack is plugged in. Tried many settings, reinstalled drivers, nothing helped. So we figured a USB audio cable would do. To our happy conclusion, this cable just works and there are no more sound problems. We plug our TRS connector into this device and then into the USB port on the laptop. It will probably work fine when plugged into a USB hub. Simple, easy and inexpensive solution. I haven't tried any other mic jack, but assumed it would work like a headset.
