It's definitely a lot better than the traditional "helping hands" with multiple ball joints and thumb screws - it's a lot easier to position the alligator clips exactly where you want them and have four clips You much more more accommodation options. The item I received was essentially as described. The "rubber protective cap" on the jaws of the alligator clip only looks like heat shrink tubing, and despite claims that "the cap can be removed or put on if necessary," it doesn't look like it can be removed without tearing it it off. Most of the photos of this product show tubes; The picture that promises "8 extra rubber caps" shows real rubber caps instead of the tubes I received. (I didn't get the extra rubber caps, but I did get an extra alligator clip that had the tubes installed in both jaws.) There's a blocky rubber cap on the free end that you squeeze to open the jaws, and this cap can be removed and easily replaced. Three of the four arms had very strong magnets holding them to the base; the fourth (on one of the long arms) has a much weaker magnet than the others, and the arm is easily knocked over even if squeezed a little. I assume I only got one faulty one and most of them don't suffer from this problem. I'm taking off a star for the weak magnet, but other than that I'm very happy with it.
