Review on ORIA Wireless Digital Thermometer with 3 Remote Sensors: Indoor Outdoor Temperature Monitor for Home, Office, Bedroom - LCD Backlight, Hygrometer Humidity Gauge by Adam Boesel

Attractive and well maintained unit!

I bought this thermometer/hygrometer to replace an existing instrument I was using for my wine cellar. I've always had doubts about the accuracy, since the measured values sometimes fluctuated greatly. It turned out that I had good reasons for doing so, because during the test I noticed that the temperatures differ slightly even when the sensors are placed next to each other! Compared to my old device, this device is smaller and much more attractive. The numbers are a bit smaller and harder to read, but there's a backlight to make up for that a bit. It has the same F/C, Min/Max, and Sync functions, but since the controls are on the back, they're more difficult to use if you decide to wall-mount it. I don't like that these run on disposable CR2477 lithium cells. This helps reduce the size of the devices, but is much less environmentally friendly. My old device used rechargeable AAA batteries, which are much more environmentally friendly. The instructions state a lifespan of 3 months for the main unit and 6 for the remote controls. That's about what I got from my rechargeable batteries, but since they're not disposable I have to keep a supply on hand. I tested this device by placing all the sensors next to each other and balancing the temperature. Although I've seen random temperature and humidity deviations of 1/2 degree, these are generally consistent between all sensors. Unlike my old unit, the room temperature and humidity readings also generally agree with a nearby wall thermostat, which gives me confidence in the readings. One thing I've noticed is that sometimes one of the sensors fails. Seems like the connection might be spotty. I don't think it has anything to do with distance as I've seen it both when the sensors were nearby on my desk and after placing them in my basement. In terms of placement, the sensors are designed to attach magnetically. If you don't have a magnetic surface, there is a small mounting hole that you can attach a small strap to, or you can use velcro or double-sided tape. Unfortunately none of that was included and I had to find something that would work. They're sold for both indoor and outdoor use, but unlike my old device, the sensors themselves aren't isolated from the elements. I very much doubt they will survive in wet or damp places. They are more than adequate for my purposes and much more accurate than my old instrument, so I'm happy with them so far. However, time will tell the battery life.
