It's easy to use and seems accurate. It's very big - almost a foot long - so it's a good thing the horse doesn't know what's in store for him. I wish the business ending was a little rounder. There is a taper at the end so the rounded end of the insert is smaller than I expected. It's not pointed or sharp, but it's a lot thinner than my old mercury horse thermometer with a bulb on the end. I bought this to add to my horse travel emergency kit but I think I'll keep it for stable use from now on and take my old mercury thermometer on the road so I don't have to worry about battery life .
