My idea was to drill holes on each side of the ceiling joists (top) and go through them so I could see the joists (bottom) while I installed the skin strips for the new spiked and grooved ceiling. It didn't work because they wouldn't stick to even a small piece of straw and just fell through. no matter what they really are for.
