GREAT fabric shelf but no air chambers! READ ME > MOD INSTRUCTIONS

*** PROS *** Excellent quality fabric shelf and the included weight straps are very well made and sturdy. The airbags provide good cushioning between your cargo and the roof (this also works on glass roofs - a big plus!). Posture is stable at highway speeds of 60 to 75 mph. *** CONS *** Airbags don't take much heat/pressure/load and it's only a matter of time before they fail (solution/mod below). *** GENERAL *** The trunk worked great on my Scion tC (100% glass roof) for 3-4 rides before 2 out of 4 airbags deployed at the same time. Am I inflating too much or tying my 80 lb yak too tight? Maybe. Also, it wasn't a good idea to leave the trunk on my car while kayaking either - it was too hot (Southern California weather) and it emptied pretty quickly. Instead of returning/exchanging it I modified it and now it's the perfect roof rack I was hoping for. ***MOD*** 1) You will need 4.3 inch pool noodles. Cut them 36 inches long. You can find them at your local store for less than $3 each. 2) Cut the valve off, thread a piece of wood (I still used glued sticks) through this hole and move it until it touches the edge of the tissue chamber. Cut the fabric in a straight line. The wood ensures that you don't cut through each end of the fabric, just one. 3) Deflate and remove entire air can - just pull. If the camera gets too hot and sticks to the fabric, just make sure it's completely deflated and pull as hard as you can - it will eventually come loose. Don't worry, the fabric is really strong and the stitching won't tear. 4) Put in the pool noodles. 5) Using a lighter, light the edge of the fabric very quickly, being careful not to burn it. the fire. Ready. No more air chambers and no pump needed. Why not just return it and use clean pool noodles/styrofoam bricks instead? With just noodles/foam blocks you are putting ALL the pressure/load on the top of your roof which is not good especially if you have a glass roof. With this fabric roof rack, you first apply a BIG load/pressure to the luggage and then simply tie it to the roof of your car. Big difference right here! TIP: If you're bringing a kayak, do yourself a favor and tie down the bow and stern with ratchet straps. This ensures your kayak stays centered at all times, so sudden breaks in the road won't give you a heart attack. ;)

Pros
  • STRONG AND RELIABLE: The inflation process creates a stable connection to the roof. Each set of these roof rack bars features 5 integrated metal D-ring attachment points (no fabric loops) to securely secure loads up to 175 pounds. Air technology cushions and protects your gear, including paddleboards or snowboards.
Cons
  • Some Flaws
