This is a rubber molded metal gasket. The crescent appears to be made of high quality silicone. I applied a thin coat of RTV sealant to the entire gasket on both sides. It might have worked fine without them, but it takes a lot of work to install these parts, so I wouldn't want to risk it. Consider purchasing camshaft seals when replacing. I didn't do this and used RTV when assembling. You won't have too much trouble with them leaking, but it most likely isn't an expensive part and can be replaced if you replace that part too. I used mine on a 2004 Audi A4 1.8T.
