I wanted to convert a VCR video stream to an .mpg file for burning to DVD. This inexpensive device made recording a breeze. I was concerned that there might be cryptic issues or incompatibilities as some reported, but it "just worked" for me. I installed the software and hardware and ran the software and then clicked to start and stop recording and the result was an .mpg file. This is on a Dell Dimension 4500 2.26GHz running the latest version of WinXP. This device doesn't have much (or any?) processing power, so it relies on your PC's CPU to digitize the video stream. This is why it requires a 2GHz or better processor and is probably why this box can sell for less than others claiming similar functionality. As far as I know, this architecture is good: why pay for another specialized processor when my existing PC can handle the task? Additionally, the minimal hardware means this device is fully powered from a USB connection and doesn't require an external power supply like some more sophisticated products. This is a nice benefit as we can all do without extra "wartsβ.
