I didn't even know these things existed until I came across a very long Cisco switch with an even longer detachable power supply. Even adjusting the brackets on the switch didn't leave me enough room to plug the device in later. On a whim I was looking for a rack extender and this one popped up. Dispatched a second day later and my switch was in place. At first I was confused how they would work until I got my hands on them. They're actually Z-shaped, so they curve inward to maintain the standard rack width after expanding 4 inches. One end consists of standard screw holes while the other requires square screw and nut connectors (included). Assembly was easy, but it required some wiggling and slight bending of the arms to get it in place, but once the screws were tightened everything seemed firmly in place. Overall, they seem like a solid solution to an unusual problem.
