TV remote does not adjust volume on digital outputs

I have an ARC input from the TV and a SPIDF output to the receiver. The TV remote does NOT control the volume of the digital outputs (SPIDF or coaxial). It only works with analog stereo outputs and is useless to me. I asked a question before buying and the seller said it would work, but the reality is that the digital stream 1 and 0 has no "volume". Otherwise, it looks like a well-made device.
