MUST be plugged into the cigarette lighter AND with the engine running. The cable is also short. unless of course you use it on a motorcycle that happens to be fitted with a cigarette lighter socket. I have a standard size 4 door sedan and it barely reaches the rear wheels. I would recommend getting one that can also run on regular AC power. Might be a bit more expensive but the convenience is worth it.
