Carpet is not bad but not great. It holds dirt very well, however, there are two problems. One size fits all. My cat often jumped right over it so she didn't pick up a lot of litter but couldn't mark too much because I had to look more closely at the measurements. The biggest issue for me was that if the litter stuck in it gets wet the only way to get it out is to take it outside and spray it with a hose. My litter box is in the bathroom so splashes are inevitable and it took too long to clean, so I replaced it with a larger, more open rug that has served our needs better so far.
