Catches trash fairly well. Some manage to get past it, but it's a durable mat that's lightly rubberized so the filling stays on much longer than a regular mat. I've tried just using a small mat and it works MUCH better.

Carpet is not bad but not great. It holds dirt very well, however, there are two problems. One size fits all. My cat often jumped right over it so she didn't pick up a lot of litter but couldn't mark too much because I had to look more closely at the measurements. The biggest issue for me was that if the litter stuck in it gets wet the only way to get it out is to take it outside and spray it with a hose. Helped a lot to reduce the trash I walked on and often ended up on my bed. I rent a room at my sister's house and my cat would often jump out of the litter box and then onto my bed. I've only had it four days, but I like it. For those who have complained that it's too small that the tray covers all but a tiny bit, do you put the entire rug under the tray?
