Great inexpensive way to make some "wood "

Years ago I saw someone wallpapering a huge ugly yellow chipboard cabinet with wood contact paper. I decided to do the same with our giant white chipboard cabinet. So I bought 8 rolls (I only used 7 but don't mind an extra roll for the future). If you look closely at the product, it becomes clear that this is not a real tree. I would never cover a nice piece of furniture with it. But if you want a cheap thing to look better, go for it. I definitely did that and it worked great. We bought new desks for the kids, both made out of cherry wood. This dark brown was the closest I could get. It certainly worked well enough. Now it looks like we have a dark brown red wardrobe. It definitely doesn't match the dark cherry wood, but it's close enough, I'm happy. I recommend that if you are covering a large item, you use a large ruler to flatten the paper as you slowly peel off the backing. This helps minimize blisters and wrinkles. This paper stretches just enough to allow you to smooth out the many creases and bubbles that can form during application. Don't be impatient and you can get most of them to straighten out completely without creating permanent wrinkles or creases. When attaching, you can easily lift the paper back up to remove wrinkles. If you pierce blisters with a needle, they can be flattened and the tiny hole won't be visible. The first thing I paneled was the right door. I definitely had some wrinkles that I made permanent. But you can't say it until you come up and really look at it or run your hands over it. I did a much better job with the left door and sides. I made this whole closet myself so it doesn't have to be a two person job. As others have pointed out, due to the direction of the pattern, you can easily overlap the paper without anyone noticing. Where it overlaps it only gets a little darker because of the double thickness, but that doesn't matter either. Overall I'm very happy with the ability to turn the big white monster into something to match the new furniture. I wish I had done this a long time ago.

Pros
  • Easy to apply, just peel and stick, no residue
