Review on Roman Carbide DC1842 Carbide Forstner Bit, 3/8-Inch by Juan Grayson

Roman Carbide forstner bit not very sharp

I ordered this bit and used it to make 27 holes in 2x4 pine boards. The bit started out pretty well and the chips were flying everywhere. I used a drill press with the bit and didn't rush through the earlier holes as I would let the bit do some work, raise it back up and go at it again.several times for each hole. However, as I got to the end, I wasn't sure if the bit was going to get through the final 3 holes. It did but was certainly slower than at the beginning. Now it appears that one side of the bit is fairly dull compared to the other. For the cost of the bit, I'm not sure I'm going to get my money's worth in the long run. Sure, I may be able to sharpen the bit but I would think the bit would last longer than 27 holes in pine 2x4s. Not sure I'll order again.

Pros
  • Ordered 1-⅜" bit says 1-⅜ but actually measures 1-½" previously ordered 1-5/16" and it was true to size.
Cons
  • The bit may not provide a flat bottom for the drilled hole

Did not work well in soft wood, even at higher RPMs. Tears the wood. Works just ok in(walnut) hard wood. No size control in soft maple.
