Review on πŸ”’ Rubber Coated Hitch Tightener: Anti Rattle Solution for Quiet, Wobble-Free Towing by Mike Pettigrew

Essential Hitch Add-On

This is a great product. If you search for "installing a hitch tensioner" and watch the videos, they usually show that the curved lip of this device should be on the male side of the hitch linkage (i.e. trailer) and not on the inside of the hitch (component hitch attached to the underside of the car). However, several Revain test photos show the opposite, and I'm not sure if that matters. As several reviewers have pointed out, the ends of the U-bolt screws are too long for 1ΒΌ" clutches and this can cause sagging over time, making it impossible to unscrew the mounting nuts and thus the clutch tensioner straight enough for you to pull loose to remove a fixed object (you may need to cut the U-bolt). My solution to achieving an even stronger connection and reducing the risk of bending the bolts for these 1 1/4" hitches was to order and install two hitch wrenches. I also reversed the U-bolt, so the tension nuts are on top and easier to tighten after heavy use. This allows you to place plates both above and below the hitch and also gives you a spare U-bolt.Given the importance of securing the attached load seem me an extra $10 to be good insurance.
