I don't know why the bolt is so long, it doesn't make sense. The first day I used it it scraped the ground tearing it off the hitch and bending the pin, after that it scraped the ground several times until I took it off (my car is no lower than any other car). This is for the lightest applications. I tried using it with a weight distribution hitch on a caravan. I screwed it as tight as I could with a regular 3/8" ratchet. If you search for "installing a hitch tensioner" and watch the videos, they usually show that the curved lip of this device should be on the male side of the hitch linkage (i.e. trailer) and not on the inside of the hitch (component hitch attached to the underside of the car).
