You want them to protect your meters!
Now I have four of them. I have insanely beautiful marble tables and I cook A LOT. I didn't want cooking oil or spills on the shelves so I bought two first and then two more. I have one on each side of the stove and one on each side of the farm sink. I also use them on my dresser when I have company so I can make charcuterie boards. You never know they're under the food, but they totally protect my buffet.
