Review on Optimize Your Server Efficiency with StarTech.com 1U Vented Server Rack Cabinet by Mike Carter

Revainrating 4 out of 5

Built like a tank; available space may suffer

Stable shelf; It claims to support 44 lbs / 20 kg and I'm sure you could put more on it with no side effects. Part of this strength is due to the rounded edge present on both the back and front of the shelf. As other reviewers have noted, this lip slightly reduces the overall height available for the hardware to be installed. In a typical setup (in a 1U space) you have about 1 3/8" (35mm) for equipment since the shelf takes up the bottom 3/8" of space. If the items you want to put on the shelf are taller, you will need additional shelf space. The maximum width available for equipment is just over 17 1/16 inches, but if you have an item that wide simply attach rack tabs to it instead of using a shelf. down and use the aforementioned edge to prevent things from sliding forward or backward off the shelf; There may be a 6 3/8" deep unit between the back and front edges. Why so small considering this shelf is listed as 7" deep? Well, it's more like 6 3/4" deep. Overall "This is a great shelf. It comes in its retail packaging with no additional packaging so I can understand why some people had their packaging damaged (I was fine). In my case I wanted the equipment to be exactly 1U high on it but I could afford the extra space above. Your use case may vary, so be aware of the 1 3/8" high / 6 3/4" deep / 17 1/16" wide available for installation. Another note, it comes with 4 cage nuts, plastic washers and standoff screws, and they are all M6 sized. If your other gear uses UK sizes, just set them aside.

Pros
  • Maximum ventilation: Ventilated shelf provides even airflow to effectively dissipate heat from servers. It's also great for cooling your computer and AV equipment.
