Make them an inch longer than you need - don't forget to adjust the pilot hole as well.
The pointed tip doesn't seem to "grab" or bite until you go 1/2 deeper than necessary as the required pilot hole is much longer than the screw. I had to switch to a multithreaded design and it worked much better for my application. (underbody over plate with DELTA-FL and landscape tarpaulins)
