They are similar but not as good as the old balsa planes. In particular, they aren't that great at adjusting the wings, as they lack that little bend in the slots that you can use to give the plane more or less lift. The other change is that the rubber band feels more anemic - our plane just couldn't get off the ground under its own power - we had to jettison it instead. So it's a cheap treat, but the long coil with short result didn't make this toy as popular as I thought. She really needs a stronger elastic that can pull harder and longer for her to take off. . For the price, however, it's still a classic that makes us all feel nostalgic. :) I would recommend buying a higher end model in the hopes that it will perform better.
