Nostalgic Fun: Airplane Kits

Give Airplanes to 4- and 12-year-olds who are electronic devices for Christmas. It was a new experience for them and adults got the opportunity to exchange ideas. It was a lot of fun for everyone involved. A balsa airplane will hold and fly much better than the foam airplanes sold today. A four-year-old needed help assembling airplanes.

It does exactly what it's supposed to do

As a kid I loved flying light balsa airplanes, both pitched and rubber powered. I bought this for my 7 year old granddaughter who has everything but didn't have it. she loved it. He did exactly what he was supposed to do and she was happy to play with him. When we left my mom put it away so we could play with it again when I got back. Next - radio-controlled helicopters. :-)

  • Top marks for grip and durability from testers

The rubber band broke after several flights. They should include a spare so you can see how tight it can be before it breaks. It's a little tricky to get decent flights because you have to adjust the fore and aft position of the wings, as well as the rudder and horizontal stabilizers. A small child definitely needs the help of adults. Because the wing moves after landing, it needs to be corrected each time. Like I said, impractical. Very useful when flying properly. Good price, classic…

Not as cool as in the good old days.

They are similar but not as good as the old balsa planes. In particular, they aren't that great at adjusting the wings, as they lack that little bend in the slots that you can use to give the plane more or less lift. The other change is that the rubber band feels more anemic - our plane just couldn't get off the ground under its own power - we had to jettison it instead. So it's a cheap treat, but the long coil with short result didn't make this toy as popular as I thought. She really needs a…
