Review on ๐Ÿšต Zefal 'Cristophe' Half Toe Clip for Mountain Bicycles by Matt Watson

Buy these if you don't use a clipless system

I fitted these Zefal Christophe finger clips to my Touring Hybrid a year ago after not getting used to the Time system. They go very well with my Merell Moab Ventilator running shoes. We can divide pedaling into four quadrants: (1) downward motion; (2) "Rollback" at the bottom of the rotation; (3) move up; and (4) "push forward" at the top. Clampless systems offer no advantage over these Christophe clamps either when pushing down or when "pushing" up. These Christophe clips allow you to push down and forward as hard as your muscles will allow. Clicker system users will always swear that they develop a lot of pull on cranking, but crank tension sensor studies don't support that claim. Only an elite minority of professional cyclists actually develop significant pedaling power throughout their ride. For mere mortals, at best, completely relieve the lifting pedal. This is where the Christophe clamps provide enough centering to allow the lift leg to be fully relieved on the upstroke without losing position to push forward and down. So Christophe clamps definitely increase efficiency over open platform pedals. They are at a serious disadvantage compared to clampless systems during the "pull" phase at the bottom of the turn. The legs have powerful retraction muscles, but very little retraction is possible with the Christophe clips. A little but not much. This is just enough to keep your foot on the pedal, but not enough to propel your bike forward. My only complaint is that only two sizes are offered. My Merells are 11.5 and ended up set too far back. Size L/XL is really not that big. It would be better if the company offered a longer clip or if the package included extra spacers and longer screws for men over size 10. Please vote yes if you found this review helpful. This practice no longer matters because Big River has chosen to ignore the number of "helpful" votes when presenting product reviews in "highest rated" order. However, this is a courtesy to your fellow shoppers who did not receive a product for free in exchange for a review, and yet took the time to write a review that has been carefully researched and written.
