Review on πŸ› οΈ WEN BG4280 Variable Grinder Flexible: A Powerhouse for Precision Grinding by Nick Cleary

Revainrating 5 out of 5

Well balanced, excellent quality for the DIY or hobbyist.

Good mill. Over 40 years of intensive industrial use of bench grinders, workshop and hobby use, 6", 8" and 10". This grinder is not industrial and you know when and how you will use it simply because of the price.. Circle ,cuts the same point of material Grinding wheels are an abrasive, not a cutting edge like a saw blade with teeth, thousands of points cut material instead of 10-20-40-80-120 points per revolution.always used when removing metal when grinding metal Der Bench grinder is most efficient for shaping metal and not removing large amounts of metal Don't expect too much from the bench grinder, it was designed for FYI 8" grinding wheel at 2000rpm = 4189fpm compared to a 6" grinding wheel at 2000 rpm = 3142 fpm I have heard many complaints about motor heat and vibration HEAT: All electric motors generate heat and get hotter under load I have this WEN coffee grinder direct t tested out of the box and it heats up well. If you think it's getting too hot, you can't endlessly touch the motor housing itself without burning yourself. stop using it Leave it running without use, it will get cold. If you turn it off, it gets hot for a while, which isn't very good, and it takes longer to cool down. (If you need industrial power, pay another $400) VIBRATION: (can also cause excessive heat) due to 4 causes. (1) The shaft is bent, the shaft is not exactly centered from end to end (manufacturing issue due to machining/manufacturing location), (2) the grinding wheels are not tight on the shaft and are not centered on the shaft (on a new machine, most likely due to assembly, you can fix it), (3) the grinding wheel itself is not balanced (most likely the reason how it was made, also very easy to fix), thread them so that they are right and left and OD (outer diameter). (4) Bearings removed, unlikely on a new machine but not impossible. Mine, straight out of the box and assembled, not even rigidly attached to the surface/table, very little vibration, okay, but needed some adjustment/fixing on the grinding wheels. (The included dressing tool will not work on the sides of the wheels, the biggest culprit for imbalance, use a dressing stone or similar) After you are straightened or "smooth". Brilliant! Great bench grinder for home or hobby use for sharpening or fine tuning metal edges. Not the razor sharp edge of a razor, but it will help you get closer. I would recommend this 8 inch variable speed bench grinder from WEN to anyone who needs what it was designed for. Personally, slow speed works best 99% of the time, but the ability to go higher is a great option.

Pros
  • Low speeds for maximum accuracy, high speeds for fast material removal.
Cons
  • Others.
