Chaco causes controversy. People tend to either love them or hate them, although most haters just don't like the way they look and haven't actually worn them. At first they are heavy and a bit stiff. The straps feel smooth but a bit rough on the skin. They're sometimes awkward to adjust, especially with a finger loop, and tend to tighten on their own as you walk. But wear them for a while and they start to adjust. The outsole flexes more easily. The straps will soften and stop tightening. The Classic Z is a durable hiking and water sandal. These are my favorite matching shoes of all time. It shouldn't be "minimal". The fit hasn't changed since I bought my first pair 13 years ago - it's wider at the toes, although not very wide, and keeps my narrower heel snug enough. They're still pretty heavy, but you'll appreciate the amazing underfoot protection and arch support they offer. They have everything Birkenstocks are good at and add what they lack: flexibility, good grip and easy to wash to get rid of any smell. And believe me, your old berets (and your feet in them) really stink, and you can never get rid of that smell without ruining them. Now I've switched from the Z1 to the Z2 and I love the toe loop. At first I was afraid it would bother me, but it makes the landing more stable and prevents the front end from snagging under objects in the way. Chaco is doing well. So if you hesitate with the Chaco fit and mostly wear tight-fitting shoes, you are in for a big change. All I can say is that it takes some time to get used to, especially the sheepskin coat. But you won't regret it.
