Connection is spotty at best - only good potential for motion detection

I had high hopes for this motion detection camera with no cloud service, but with a lag in live preview and an unstable WiFi connection, this is it unacceptable ; will return. Good: Most third-party security cameras have so many false alarms that they become unusable. This one did a very good job of only providing human alert notifications without the need for a paid cloud service like other branded camera systems. With motion sensitivity set to 10 and motion alert disabled, it couldn't detect our 10-pound dog walking the sidewalk. He also missed the car on the side of the road at the edge of the screen. Not sure if it has a motion alert limit where it detects something? I haven't used it long enough to know how accurately it would always recognize a person, but the alerts it gave with Human Alert were very good, so I really tried to get this camera to work for me . My other cameras have all other types of false alarms with flying bugs etc but this one doesn't work even with sensitivity set to 10 and human alarm disabled, which is good. However, since he doesn't even take in a small dog, what else is he missing out on? The wide-angle view of the 130-inch camera is very good. Timeline History of previous alerts. However, the camera sometimes throws an error when trying to view it - likely due to the WiFi connection, as detailed below. Bad: I can't make a persistent connection to the camera when I get an alert to see what it is. Sometimes it takes 3 seconds (like similar cameras in this price range) to get to the live preview, or up to 30 seconds, or just times out indicating a bad connection and try again. I have an Orbi dual band router that I was able to use to get the camera to accept a 2.4GHz signal to set up the camera. What I've experienced with other 2.4GHz cameras is that once you tune the camera to a dual-band signal, it stays connected to 2.4GHz, even if it's dual-band router acts. My existing camera installed in the same location can stay connected all the time, logs on very quickly and has no trouble with instant live previews. I'm constantly trying to connect this mockup to a live preview. Once connected it also doesn't stay connected as I look at the previous alert history and it times out. Strangely, when connecting to live preview, the audio doesn't always turn on even though I'm watching a live video. Sometimes I hear birds chirping or myself talking while testing the camera, other times it just stays still. One day I turned off Wi-Fi on my phone to use my data plan and I heard a tone but couldn't play it consistently. I was just comparing myself to another camera and in preview mode the crickets are loud and easy to hear; This mic must be really bad as it's usually pretty quiet when I hear sound, or it just doesn't sound at all. When connecting, the live preview is a bit blurry as I see the image start and stop for a moment. The manual says you need a 60% Wi-Fi signal and I've seen nothing less than 80% on mine when connected. I contacted support and they said contrary to the manual you need 80% or more for WIFI but magically higher than the number I told them. Support got back to me within a day of the initial inquiry but I haven't heard back from them to see if they have other options so the service seems as erratic as the camera connection. IF you only have a 2.4GHz channel signal this camera may work better for you, but my dual band Orbi cannot create two separate 2.4/5.0GHz channels and since all my others Cameras have 2.4GHz channels works I do not recommend this camera Human Alert - The feature only identified a motion alert when a person was within 30ft of the camera, even if the camera could see 300ft. Keep that in mind when using the human alarm function as I don't recall reading the camera's alarm range. Depending on how wide your field of view is, recording will also not start until the subject has walked about 6 to 8 feet through the lens before taking the picture. I have a long sidewalk that captures the image at the end, but if it wasn't for that I would miss a person if my vision was restricted. Just keep downloading and then restart. Switch back to live view and it will appear immediately, so there is no connection issue at the moment. Motion alert and you will be informed later what's going on and you want to see what the camera captured, you will not have video. Video only records 10-30 seconds when motion is detected to save battery. Whether or not my other cameras are recording a 24/7 alarm, I can always go back and see what was recorded at a specific time/event. These battery powered cameras only record movement to save battery. So keep that in mind when purchasing this type of camera. If the camera connection works quickly and reliably, I would give it four stars.

Pros
  • Excellent overall performance
Cons
  • Doubtful
