Review on Topeak Super Tourist DX Trunk Rack with Side Bar for Disc Brake Bicycles by Jim Fuhrer

So far so good for cycling

I've had this rack for about two months now. It's been quite a happy experience so far. The stance I received was slightly off center, but a little tweaking didn't fix anything. After about 100 kilometers, the black border was worn in several places due to the metal hardware on my bag. If the plastic had rubbed against the paint, I'm sure the same thing would have happened, but for a longer period of time. I've heard this is the norm for Topeak racks. But seriously, who cares. I didn't load the trunk with panniers, but I'm guessing there's a separate pole for that. Some shelves can be quite wide, covering the top rails. The luggage rack came with two plastic holders for the taillights. One is for lights that use clamps. Another fairly wide bracket I assume is for mounting a European style lantern. I used a clip-on mount for a 25-mile ride, but it just made me nervous. So I took a stainless steel bolt about two inches long, some nylon spacers about 3/4 inch in diameter, a small washer and a nylon nut. I screwed this into the strut taillight mount so the bolt was parallel to the ground. The nylon spacers made a nice and tidy stand for the chainstay clip that came with my lantern to wrap around. Now my light is going nowhere! Thank you, Big Orange Box Store. Go to the hardware section where all the drawers are full of nuts and bolts. I installed this rack on my 2008 Gary Fisher Wahoo rim with a Sunlite seatpost clamp with brazed lugs. Some installation tips. Be sure to use a spirit level when installing the stand. I didn't prebend the chainstays. I screwed them loosely to the post but tightly to the frame. Then I slowly pushed the bars against the post and got a nice gentle bend. Be sure to keep that spirit level in mind and adjust as you tighten. enter the frame. The last thing you want is for this thing to be dangling and thrown at your rear wheel while you're driving. Nylock nuts are used to attach the chainstays to the upper tube. The only catch is they aren't chromoly and the finish is pretty flimsy, but then again I didn't pay for the tube or the old mountain stance. .
