Before I bought it, I was a bit tired of reading other reviews that described an unbalanced sharpening (a sharp lead sticks out on one side, it's still wooden on the other side ). I really experienced this when I started using it and wanted to pack it up and send it back. HOWEVER, I quickly realized that if you hold the pen with a semi-slack grip, you allow the pen to rotate naturally in your hand while the blades rotate and sweep over the areas of greatest resistance from all directions " hook", end up with a very sharp (and balanced) point, as you like. If I hold the pencil tight enough that it doesn't rotate, I end up with a crooked tip that can only be used on one side. Rotating the pencil in your hand doesn't feel 100% natural as I've never had to do it with other solid sharpeners, but it's easy to learn. Maybe this solution only works for me, but I think a lot of people with this problem gave up too quickly, like me. I also love the "old school" feel - every time I use it. I remember using almost the same pencil sharpener in elementary school. Excellent price. The reason it's 4 stars and not 5 stars is because the build feels a bit flimsy (which I think is reflected in the price) and it's a bit difficult to install with the screws provided (hint: I have longer ones). Used screws I had and I've also found that removing the metal case during installation is critical to getting the angle of your screwdriver or drill bit to drive the screw in properly.
