Appears to work as advertised. It has two layers to filter. The removable top layer is something like a green dish sponge that attaches with small Velcro straps. This part can be easily removed/reinstalled and can be easily cleaned with a vacuum cleaner. Conveniently, this first layer prevents large particles from quickly and unnecessarily clogging the primary filter component, greatly extending filter life. It also gives you a visual indication of how well the filter is performing (and it's actually a bit concerning). Sometimes it's hard to tell how the main filter component works, so this top level gives you a very real and immediate picture. a visual representation of how your filter is affecting air quality. We had this in the Northwest during California wildfire season and all I can say is WOW. Very glad we had it. It's incredible how many solid particles are floating invisibly in a relatively small and supposedly controlled environment. Highly recommended - great value for money!
