At first I used one of these to hold my screen when it cracked until I could fix it. Since then I've always installed it and they have rescued my phone several times, the protection can break but the screen underneath has been fine. It was a little fiddly to install the first time, worrying about every speck of dust, but it was a lot easier the second (and third and fourth) time. Removing a broken screen protector is easy, and the installation kit includes wipes and a microfiber cloth so you can easily remove any remaining broken glass.
