Ever since I had kids I've had a sense of smell and taste you won't believe. I can stand in front of a garbage can and smell individual odors. I smelled fire an hour before I was even declared insane when we looked for it and didn't see anything. I can taste metals in food because they are stored in metal the same way they are stored in plastic. When it comes to my coffee, if someone uses tap water that hasn't gone through this filter before, I throw out the whole pot. It's not even a matter of subtlety, it completely changes the taste of my coffee to the point where it disgusts me. These filters work. I can't tell you how well and what it cleans out of the water, but I can be absolutely sure that it cleans something. Day and night with and without. They are a staple in our home and have been for over 4 years. By the way, we have large containers with spring-loaded spouts. They have been washed in the dishwasher, used daily by 8 people including 6 children and they still work perfectly. No cracks. Filters last longer than advertised. I can tell how slowly they shed water when it's time to change them. They work until they stop letting water through. In our case, that's about 2 months per cartridge. We empty and fill our 18 cup dispenser at least 2 times a day, sometimes 3 and 4 times. Hope that helps.
