More like 79 1/4 " holes
The gate does the job for me. It keeps my dogs in the kitchen. It looks decent and is easy to install. The gate closes on its own. It fits an 80" opening. Almost, more like 79 1/4", I had to add 3/4" boards behind the mounting brackets on one side. I fed them right through the 80" hole in the case. It is pretty weak.
